I was alive when 9/11 happened. Granted, I wasn’t very old, and I don’t remember the event, but I do remember the slogan, so to speak, that comes when speaking about 9/11 – Never Forget. Kids younger than me (and even some my own age) have no idea what really happened on 9/11, and it seems like no one cares enough to teach them. In case you don’t know, or don’t remember, what happened 19 years ago, I have embedded a video for you from Prager University. It goes through exactly what happened on September 11, 2001.

Today, 19 years later, the sacrifices of so many seem to have been forgotten.

For New York to even consider not setting up their annual light remembrance of the Twin Towers, all because they are afraid of a virus is ridiculous. So, it’s okay to forget about the sacrifices of so many in the face of a terrorist attack when there’s the possibility of people catching a virus that has only killed 188,000 people in the U.S. (assuming the data is correct)? (1)

Do you realize that you are more likely to die of heart disease, cancer, or sepsis than you are from the Wuhan China virus (2)? (Since I’m already stirring the pot, I feel no need to remain politically correct).

According to data from 2017, you are about as likely to die from an accidental cause (like falling down stairs, establishing the wrong kind of contact with a gas lawnmower, or falling out of bed and hitting your head on your bedside table) as you are this virus (2). This virus is not as deadly as the media is making it out to be, and Americans are afraid of something about as risky as getting hit by a dump truck carrying a load of mulch to your great-aunt’s house across the country – a freak accident.

Because of this unnecessary fear, the memorials of 9/11 were threatened to be cancelled. Flag Day, Independence Day, Memorial Day, and D-Day were all cancelled. I guess someone should rewrite the National Anthem. Honestly, are we still “the land of free and the home of the brave”? Please tell me I’m wrong…but look around. Bravery isn’t hiding from a virus. And freedom isn’t wearing a mask that has been repeatedly and scientifically proven to not stop a virus (3, 4).

This September 11th, we need to stop being afraid. If you’re that afraid of a virus all of a sudden, then why in the world were you touching the Walmart shopping cart beforehand? Believe me, you do not want to know all of the germs and microbes living on that handle.

Remember those who gave their lives in the face of a terrorist attack. Remember those who voluntarily died and crashed the airplane in a field in Pennsylvania to keep more lives from being taken. Common sense, maturity, and patriotism seem to have gone out the window. It’s up to you and I to bring it back and make sure our American Pride stays strong…no matter our skin color.

Never forget the sacrifices of 9/11 – also known as Patriot Day. Be a Patriot. Stand up.

Author’s note: This semester is one of my busiest ones yet. I am signed up for 21 credits, not including the microbiology lecture I am a teacher’s assistant for. I am also involved in research and applying to colleges and jobs. As a result, I have found time to be a very scarce commodity. I’m only going to be writing a post once a week.
