Don’t Be Afraid To Stand Out

“Don’t let your lights go down. Don’t let your fire burn out. ‘Cause somewhere, somebody needs a reason to believe. Why don’t you rise up now? Don’t be afraid to stand out – that’s how the lost get found.”

– Britt Nicole “The Lost Get Found”

I was listening to some songs on YouTube when Britt Nicole’s “The Lost Get Found” popped up in the playlist. I know this song is about ten years old, but as I was listening to it, the words finally hit me. In the culture that we live in, we don’t want to stand out. We don’t want to be different from everyone else. So we try to fit in as best we can. We don’t stand up for what’s right or for what God says in His Word. We tend to just agree with the majority because we don’t want to be different and labelled as “one of those” Christians (you know, the ones that actually read the Bible). Romans 12:2a tells us to “be not conformed to this world”.

Why should we be different (aside from God telling us to be)? There are people watching our every move, looking for a sign of hope. This world is an absolute mess. People are turning to many things that make them happy for a short period of time, like drugs and alcohol, but those things don’t leave them fulfilled. Somewhere, someone needs a reason to believe in God. You can be that reason. Show them that God has changed your life, that you are different.

You don’t know what anyone else is going through. That saying of you never know what someone else’s life is like if you haven’t walked a mile in their shoes holds true. The guy that you just passed could have just been fired and now doesn’t know what to do. The girl that you just walked by could have just lost her closest friend. That young teenager over there could be letting their faith in God die because of the world’s circumstances. People are good at putting up fronts because they don’t want to get hurt any more, and they don’t want others to see their vulnerability. You never know what is going on in anyone else’s life. Everyone is searching for a sign of hope and peace – the kind that only God can give them. Some have found it, but many haven’t. Be different. Show them that you have peace beyond all understanding, and that you’re more than willing to show them how they can receive that same peace (Philippians 4:7).

“Why do we go with the flow? Why take the easier road? Why are we playin’ it safe? Love came to show us the way. Love is a chance we should take. I’m moving out of the way.”

– Britt Nicole “The Lost Get Found”

Nothing stops us from being different except ourselves. We’re too afraid of what others may think if we share the Gospel and act like ourselves, acknowledging that God saved us from eternal pain and suffering. Trust me, I’ve been there. I’ve had someone ask me why I was so happy all the time and I just told him it was because I looked on the bright side…I didn’t bring God up until the next week. I’d had this nagging feeling that I should’ve told him about God…what if he died and went to Hell because I didn’t say anything – all because I was too scared of what he might’ve thought about me if I brought up God’s name?

I think it’s high time that we stop thinking about ourselves and start thinking about others. We need to move out of the way, and let God’s glorious light shine through us.

“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?”

– Romans 10:14

The lost can only come to Jesus if someone tells them and points them to Christ. So don’t be afraid to stand out. Show everyone you meet that there’s something different about you. Move out of God’s way in your life. People will think you’re weird, and that’s alright. We have been called to give the Gospel to those we meet. Stand for God and His Word. Be ready to give the Good News of His Salvation to anyone and everyone that you meet, disregarding your thoughts of what they might think of you.

Don’t be afraid to stand out…because that’s how the lost will get found.

“So when you get the chance, are you gonna take it? There’s a really big world at your fingertips, and you know you have the chance to change it.”

  1. Rightly said, Praise God! Our profiting will appear to all when we walk in obedience to His amazing Word.

‘Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. ‘ (1 Timothy 4:16, 15)
