If You Had Been The Only Person…

“When Christ died, he died for you individually just as much as if you had been the only person in the world” – C.S. Lewis

As you probably already know, Easter (or, more specifically, Resurrection Sunday), is tomorrow. With the research I did for last Saturday’s post, I had been looking into C.S. Lewis a bit more and came across the above quote of his from Mere Christianity

With the event of Christ’s death in the forefront of people’s minds this week, I figured it would be a great point to share. Even if you had been the only person on earth, Christ would have still died for you.

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”

– Romans 5:8-12

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

– Romans 6:23

He died for our sins. Our individual sins. He gave His life, so that we may have eternal life through Him. If we were the only ones in the world, He would have still given up His life and we would have put him on the cross. Not the Romans, as some people like to blame. Our sin is the reason He died. Your sin. My sin. He died for you, just as much as if you were the only person on earth.

That principle runs all through life from the top to the bottom: Give up yourself and you’ll find your real self. Lose your life and you’ll save it. Submit to death, submit with every fiber of your being and you’ll find eternal life. Look for Christ and you’ll get Him, and with Him, everything else thrown in. Look for yourself and you’ll get only hatred, loneliness, despair, and ruin. – C.S. Lewis
