“For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.”
– Isaiah 61:11
A few weeks ago, my husband bought and put together some raised beds (he did most of the work, but someone had to supervise!) in an effort to try and grow some vegetables and keep the dog out of them.
So far, we’ve planted potatoes, onions and garlic. With only a slight modification of adding nets and pinning them down so someone can’t get her head under them to investigate the dirt, we watered and waited. Every day, we’d go out and check to see if anything grew. Days turned into weeks and no progress. I really do try to be a patient person, but where were those plants?! They should’ve grown by now!
And then, a couple of days ago, we noticed green shoots from the onions. ⅓ success! A couple days later, the garlic popped up, and then yesterday, we noticed that two potato plants have started peeking out from under the soil.
I noticed this verse in Isaiah, and it reminded me of what I’ve been focusing some of my attention on these last few weeks (and even slightly wrote about last week with The Secret Garden). The earth and the gardens will bring forth plants (hopefully the seeds you planted were good ones), just as God will cause righteousness and praise to come before the nations. To fully understand what that means, we must go to the verse before (for context!).
“I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.”
– Isaiah 61:10
Just as things grow from the earth and our gardens, the joy, praise, and righteousness that comes from the salvation God has given us (if you are saved) is seen by the world around us.
The next time you see something popping up from your garden, or a flower on a walk, or any new plant, remember that just as that grows, so does your joy and righteousness from salvation and your walk with Christ.
P.S. Yes, the featured image is of our small, but growing, onions!
