“It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jeshoshaphat to battle. Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi. And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.”
– 2 Chronicles 20:1-3
Jehoshaphat was king of Judah at the time, and knew a very large battle was on his hands. They were outnumbered and he didn’t know what to do, other than seek God. He gathered all of Judah together, stood in the midst, and pleaded with God to help them (2 Chronicles 20:4-10). And they got an answer.
“And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s. Tomorrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel. Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them: for the Lord will be with you.”
– 2 Chronicles 20:15-17
All God wanted the people to do was to stand still, and watch how He would protect His people. That must’ve been a very hard thing for them to do – but king Jehoshaphat made sure it happened. He told them to believe on God, and they will be established. He appointed people who sang praises to God while waiting for the battle. And when they looked in the watchtower the next day, they saw that there were dead bodies everywhere. God had slain their enemies for them, and it took them three days to get all of the spoils from the bodies, and they returned singing praises to God. (2 Chronicles 20:20-28)
“And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries, when they had heard that the Lord fought against the enemies of Israel. So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet: for his God gave him rest round about.”
– 2 Chronicles 20:29-30
The men of Judah walked towards a battle, but instead of discussing war strategies, they were praising God, knowing that He would provide a way out and defeat their enemies, just as He said He would. Their faith, undoubtedly, helped this come to pass. After all, if they’d charged ahead in battle, do you think God would have defeated all of their enemies? Sometimes, the hardest thing we can do is wait on God and trust His plan…and that plan turns out far better than anything we could have designed on our own.
