This summer, my mom, sister, and I went to go see Anne Wilson at a fair in a nearby state. I’ve only ever been to two concerts before. One with my parents to see Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver when they came to a nearby town in the Shenandoah Valley, and one a couple years ago, when Jon Pardi actually came to our town in the Midwest and my sister and I went.
I don’t remember much of the first concert, but Jon Pardi’s was a lot of fun – I’m glad my sister talked me into going!
But Anne Wilson’s was amazing. Of course the songs were great, and she had a fantastic entrance with her song Rebel and all the lights and smoke machine. It was so much fun. Before she entered, it started out with God Bless the USA as five American flags were presented from the grandstand, and then one of the flags made their way to the center and the National Anthem was sung. Such a great way to start out the concert!
Anne Wilson would sing a couple songs, and then she would stop and talk a bit about her story, and how God is willing for anyone to come to Him, no matter what you’re going through. She’d sing a few more songs, and then she talked about her brother, who’d died when she was younger. He died when he was 23 and she sang for the first time in public at his funeral. Her singing career grew from there, but she wanted to use it to honor God. We were at her concert a few days before her God Story EP came out, so we got to hear the new songs on there, including Twenty-Three.

See, she’d turned 23 this year, which she said was hard, because she now knew that she would live longer than her brother ever did. But what would she do with that time? She said all she wants to do is bring glory to God and point people towards him.
There were some moments, hearing about her story and her relationship with God that about brought me to tears. And after singing Twenty-Three, she then had the whole crowd join in and sing Amazing Grace.
It was such an amazing time – the songs were great, the environment was great, and hearing her story and how she could have used her background more as a “sob story” than a chance to point people to God before it’s too late and they run out of time.
I would 100% go to another concert of hers in the future. I had such a great time, and I appreciated how she actually sang her songs (instead of just lip-syncing), and how she kept bringing up her testimony and how God is waiting for us to turn to Him. I’m so glad I got the opportunity to go!
