Order of Importance

One of my part time jobs is teaching high-school level biology for a Christian homeschool organization. As I was sitting in a hotel room during my conference I went to over the summer, I completed some of my onboarding training. In the very first meeting, the organization emphasized the order of importance that they want my work to fall under:

God → Family → Work

I sat there in the zoom meeting and instantly texted my family. I was honestly shocked that a company was actually announcing that God and family come before the job they hired you for, and it made me very excited to work for someone who acknowledges what the order of importance should be. In a world that seems to push how much you have to dedicate to your job and sacrifice for your paycheck, it was shocking and astounding that this company made clear that their expectation was the opposite of the mainstream. And I immediately became a fan.

Maybe that’s my sentiment just because I’m from a younger generation, but I put in exactly what my job expects of me, occasionally more. I find that my personal time and my family is far more important than a job that will likely never result in a promotion nowadays. And, as I’m finding in my current full time job – sometimes the bare minimum expectations are a stretch for some people to reach (but that’s a topic for another day on time management). But I see it with my boss, who is salaried but is always at work from 7:30 to after 5pm. Sure, sometimes I’ll arrive before 8am, but I will also take longer lunches and I am out of there by 5pm. I don’t understand people who dedicate themselves to their career, missing other things just so they can be at work.

What is the order of importance for things in your life? Are you putting God first? Are you putting your career first? Are you putting your family first? What is the priority in your life – and is that how you are living?

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

– Matthew 6:33, King James Version
