Genesis 1-21

One of my goals this year as you may have read in Happy New Year 2026 was to dive deeper into God’s word every day. This week, I’ve been going through the book of Genesis, and it’s just reminded me more of God’s grace and mercy.

As we know, Genesis 1-5 is the account of Creation and Adam’s bloodline. Genesis 6-10 is the account of Noah and the flood and Noah’s bloodline. Genesis 11-21 covers Abraham’s life.

We know that God sent the flood to destroy the wicked people in the land, and in Genesis 8:21, we see that God promises to not destroy every living thing again with a worldwide flood, even though we are wicked from birth.

“And the Lord smelled a sweet savour; and the Lord said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.” – Genesis 8:21

Again, we see when God tells Abraham he is going to destory Sodom for being so wicked, He lets Abraham negotiate (Genesis 18). Abraham says if you find fifty righteous people in the whole city, will you spare the city? God says he will, then Abraham negotiates down to forty five. And then forty. And then thirty. And then twenty. And then lastly, 10. God said if He found 10 righteous people in the whole of Sodom, He would not destroy the city. Of course, we know what happens.

However, these chapters really reminded me how gracious and merciful God is. He could have called it quits after Adam and not saved anyone. He could have told Abraham that He was God and He could destroy whatever city He so desired. Instead, He said he would save the whole of the city for only a very small number of righteous people. Time and again in the first few chapters of the Bible, we see humans sin and God provides judgement along with grace. All of this forshadows how Jesus would come to save us from our sins.
