Occasionally, YouTube will recommend me debate videos on hot topics, especially since I watch Charlie Kirk’s videos on campuses. The argument that most people use against Christian stances is that “x isn’t in the Bible”, and this argument irritates me to no end.
X usually stands for the topic at hand, the main topics I’ve seen being abortion, transgender, and homosexuality. People will say x isn’t in the Bible, so you can’t say that it’s against God. I really dislike this argument, and you probably know why. It’s disingenuous.
Sure, the word abortion is not in the Bible.
Sure, the word transgender is not in the Bible.
Sure, the word homosexuality is not in the Bible.
Sure, the phrase don’t burn your neighbors house down isn’t in the Bible. But is this really the argument that should be used?
Exodus 21, Jeremiah 1, Luke 1, Proverbs 6, and Psalms 106 are among many verses in the Bible that speak to the fact that children in the womb are very much alive and human, and speak against murder. And probably the clearest verse: “Thou shalt not kill.” (Exodus 20:13). I can give scientific facts, but that’s not the point of this post. You probably know my stance on abortion by now. The Bible never uses the word abortion, but God makes it very clear that children in the womb are alive and that murder is evil.
Genesis explains how God made all creatures and humans male and female, mentioned over 15 times in the Bible. There is no in-between or switching. Interestingly, I found this article when researching for this post. The arguments are so ridiculous it would likely be a waste of time, but I may react to it. Again, if you’re going to use scripture to prove your point…you need to not twist words and meanings to make it say what you want it to say (Deuteronomy 4:2). Again, I can give scientific facts that prove the Bible’s position on this topic.
While homosexuality may never be used in the Bible, men sleeping with men and women sleeping with women certainly are, and it is called an abomination to God (Leviticus 20, 1 Corinthians 6, and Romans 1, among many others).
This post is not really about these talking points. It’s about not being an idiot with your arguments, especially when using the Bible.
My main point is this. If you are going to argue your position, make sure you have ground to stand on. Legitimate ground. That is how you win an argument. However, people who use this argument are convinced that they are correct, and no amount of proof you can give will sway them. Their hearts are hardened, and it’s really a sad thing. It upsets me that you can’t really have civil conversations most of the time with someone who has opposing religious and political beliefs. Everyone is so charged in their arguments that if you try to have a conversation, it doesn’t even go in one ear out and the other. It goes right over their head because they choose not to listen. I would say that this is on both sides of the political party, and that’s why I appreciated what Charlie Kirk did. He encouraged conversation, and in a world where people resort to anger before conversation, it’s a very sad thing.
I know this post may seem kind of strange, but I’m just tired of people using the Bible incorrectly in their arguments. It’s a poor way to try and prove your point.

The phrase “and things like these” covers a whole lot of “X.”
19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19–21, ESV, https://ref.ly/Ga5.19-21;esv)
