Isaiah 32

“Then judgement shall dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness remain in the fruitful field. And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever. And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places;”

– Isaiah 32:16-18

I was reading this chapter this week, and these few verses made me sit and think for a while. When we live righteously, we are rewarded with peace, quietness, and assurance. I really enjoy warmer weather, because I can sit outside and just do nothing. Not listening to music, not even reading a book.

I may start out reading a book, but before long I’ll just find myself sitting, listening to the birds flutter in the trees around me, the neighboring squirrels chattering at each other, hearing the wind rustle the leaves, and watching the dog pant in her attempts to find a rabbit to chase. I really enjoy these moments, hearing the world around me, seeing the beauty in God’s creation – and these quiet moments feel so peaceful. It feels as if all is right with the world and that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be. I get excited for spring, when I can sit outside and just enjoy the quietness and peace of nature (even if it’s just in the backyard).

When I read these verses, I appreciated that sense of quietness, assurance, and peace. Knowing that a righteous life will give us this is amazing. When we walk right with God, He gives us peace, a quietness, and an assurance forever, and we don’t need to be sitting in nature to feel this. God gives us this in our daily life – when we’re stressed at work, concerned, or feeling overwhelmed.

Even if our physical world is not peaceful, righteousness gives us peace and comfort, and we know that we are close to God and that He will never leave us, no matter the situation. In tough times, assurance and peace that comes from God is the only thing that can give us that quietness we need.
