Matthew 28:20

“The more I see of the world, the more am I dissatisfied with it; and every day confirms my belief of the inconsistency of all human characters, and of the little dependence that can be placed on the appearance of either merit or sense.”

– Pride and Prejudice, chapter 24

Elizabeth Bennet (who does fall in love with Mr. Darcy at the end of the book) is talking to her sister, Jane with that above sentiment. Mr. Darcy had persuaded Mr. Bingley that Jane’s family was improper and to move away and move on. Elizabeth’s friend, Charlotte, had married Mr. Collins, described as a suitable match given her circumstances (not an overly romantic description of your spouse). Elizabeth is quite upset with these two scenarios, and complains to her sister that humans are so inconsistent, and you can’t depend on either their merit or sense.

Elizabeth, though quite pessimistic in her view, isn’t wrong. People, no matter who they are, will always let you down. They can be your best friend in the whole world, your parents, your spouse – but we are all human and we all mess up and let others down, even if we do not intend to. But, there is one who won’t ever let you down.

“Blessed be the Lord, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications. The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.”

– Psalm 28:6-7

“What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?”

– Romans 8:31-32

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

– Romans 8:38-39

If you have put your trust and faith in God’s saving grace, then you have someone who will never disappoint or ever let you down. Someone who will always be with you. Someone you can always trust in. Someone who you know is looking out for you and will never leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).

“Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
