“And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.”
– Genesis 6:5-7
God had created the world, and everything in the world. He had looked at His creation, and said that it was very good. But after Adam sinned in the garden, and humans were given a sin curse, they kept getting worse and worse. So bad, that God was angry and willing to destroy every man and animal and living thing in the world He had created.
“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.”
– Genesis 6:8
I love this verse. The Bible talks about how angry God is and how He is going to destroy it all. But Noah found grace with God. No matter how angry God was, He still had grace to give.
“And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.
And this is the fashion which thou shalt make if of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.
And, behold, I even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die. But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee.
And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. Of the fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive. And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.”
– Genesis 6:12-21
You can read more about my view and scientific defense of a worldwide flood in my previous series, but let’s just sit and imagine this. In a world that hadn’t seen rain, God tells Noah to build an ark.
A cubit was anywhere from 17-21 inches, depending on the region. Let’s use the average of 19 inches. At 475 feet long, 79 feet wide, and 48 feet tall – it was massive. Answers in Genesis has some great perspective on these numbers (1). But this was big enough for the specified three decks, for every animal kind. (Also, the Ark Encounter is an amazing place to visit!)
Now, if you’re Noah…what do you do? Do you trust God and build this ridiculous boat?
“Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.”
– Genesis 6:22
Matt and I got a chance to see Noah at Sight and Sound Theaters when we visited some family in Pennsylvania. It was such an amazing experience. I still think Queen Esther was my favorite – but they did such a wonderful job of constructing the stage as an ark, and using a great mix of real life and animatronics that it was hard to tell which was which!
But we especially liked how they emphasized how Noah likely had doubts about this project as it was going on. After all, he was being ridiculed for doing something so ridiculous – and he also had not seen rain. But he went on faith and followed God’s direction anyway. Sight and Sound also pointed out something that I often overlook. Do you think that Noah and his family could hear those people and animals outside dying? Do you think anyone would’ve come knocking on the door once it started raining? Asking for Noah to open the door, they’re sorry for being mean, they trust now that God is sending rain. But Noah can’t open the door. God shut it and no man would be able to open it. That was such a great piece that Sight and Sound put in, and it really made me stop and think.
They ended the show in a spectacular way. The door to Heaven is still open – there’s still a way to get in. One day, that door will also be shut. Where will you be?
If you are not 100% sure that you’ll go to Heaven when you die, now is the time to repent and put your trust in Jesus Christ. If you have any questions or doubts about your salvation, click here to learn how you can be saved!
