“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
– Joshua 24:15
Matthew 6:24 reminds us that no man can serve two masters. You can’t serve God while you still serve the things of this world. Joshua 24 is the prime example of this.
In this chapter, Joshua has drawn all of the tribes of Israel together at Shechem. Joshua tells them that they need to choose who they will serve. If the people of Israel see that it is not fit for them to serve God, then Joshua tells them to pick who they will serve. This chapter demonstrates that the decision is up to us…it is our choice to serve God or not.
Who are you going to choose? If you are saved, are you just going to be happy knowing that fact, (after all, you have your “fire insurance”, so to speak) and still serve the gods of this world? Or are you going to choose to serve God wholeheartedly? You can’t do both, and the decision is completely up to you. Who are you going to serve?
