Earlier this year, Matt and I embarked on a ten day road trip. We visited Montana and Wyoming on our way into Utah. On this trip, we were stopped for a time, watching a cattle drive take over the road in Montana. We were warned about it by a cardboard sign on the back of a pickup!
Northern Utah is gorgeous, I loved the mountains and the trees! We stopped in Moab for a couple of days. Our first national park we visited was Canyonlands – the Island in the Sky.
Canyonlands (much like many of the other places we visited) made me feel so small. Island in the Sky has visitors on top of a butte, overlooking the Green and Colorado rivers. It was gorgeous. Half the time, it didn’t even look real!
But what is even cooler about Canyonlands, is that it is proof there was a global flood. Navajo sandstone is a rock formation that contains multiple layers. Many of these layers have cross-beds, which are tilted layers in a flat bed. What’s interesting is that sand got deposited at an angle, rather than horizontally.
Scientists say that it is the cause of ancient desert sand dunes, that petrified, one desert on another, for a very long amount of time, to form the Navajo sandstone.
But, that doesn’t make a ton of sense.
No desert on earth stacks up these cross-bed layers like the ones we find in Navajo sandstone. The Sahara is known for its migrating sand dunes, and these cross-bed layers are not found in the Sahara. We also don’t see sand dunes petrifying.
You want to know something really cool? Decades ago, scientists did flume experiments. This is where a pump pushes sediment and water down a track. These water flume sediments matched the cross-bed layers that are found in Navajo sandstone. To stack a new cross-bed layer on an older one, the water level is raised. Wind experiments did not match the Navajo sandstone.
Science once again proves that the Flood in Genesis existed – when the Bible speaks of the waters greatly increasing in Genesis 7:18, that provided the conditions needed for cross-bed layers to form. We have not had those conditions again, which explains why we’re not seeing any evidence of it in our current deserts. If it was truly because of wind, then we would be seeing some evidence in the Sahara, but we’re not.
Canyonlands shows us that science confirms what the Bible says about a worldwide flood. Next week, we’ll learn about some more science from our trip, but for now, feel free to look at some pictures from our trip!
